You Can Touch This

By Amos Yeo

Everyone's gunning for the touch screen crown at the moment, and not surprisingly, LG is stepping into the arena to try and wrest away the crown with the new KF700. Let's see if it has the credentials to do so.

Triple the Fun

While not many phones can boast to be a slider phone with a full touch screen interface, the LG KF700 fits this profile easily. Weighing 110g and measured at 102 x 51 x 14.5mm, the KF700 ups the ante from the KF600, featuring a sensitive and pressure responsive touch screen interface. Like most of these phones, the LG KF700 is a fingerprint nightmare, thus one will do well to invest in some form of protective covering.

You can navigate the interface of the KF700 using three methods, one of which is the touch screen. Alternatively, users can also opt for the traditional keypad and the scroll wheel. With a majority of the phone operations accessible via the expansive 3-inch touch screen, what do users require the keypad and scroll wheel for?

Well, instead of the touch screen, LG has opted to use the keypad for texting, which is definitely a boon for users with larger fingers. As for the scroll wheel, it is primarily used to operate the shortcut dial. But aside from that, other tasks such as scrolling through your contacts seems laboriously slow compared to the touch screen, especially when we could still get most of our navigation done with the touch screen. Nonetheless, the scroll wheel's inclusion is still welcomed, just for the sake of giving consumers more alternatives.

Makes your Life Good

LG's proprietary operating system ensures that your experience with the KF700 is smooth and efficient. Utilizing the KF 700's touch screen potential, each virtual key is positioned nicely on the screen to ensure a faster and more intuitive access to the functions of your choice, while the haptic feedback does help with the navigation process. However, there seemed to be a slight lag involved when we switched through its various features, which could be a deterrent for those looking for a quick and responsive interface.

We were mostly happy with the 3-megapixel camera, except for the strange fact that although there is a zoom mode for the video recorder, the camera had none. The KF700's camera lens is also not protected and thus at risk of being accidentally scratched.

If you intend to use the KF700 as a portable music player, you should know that it does not come with a 3.5mm jack for your own audio peripherals, though the provided earphones hold up just fine. Furthermore, the lack of an equalizer for the player prevents you from tweaking your tunes, but fortunately there are few reasons to do so with its above average audio playback quality. The KF700 also ties up its music and photo functions quite neatly with an excellent photo gallery and music player which makes searching and viewing your multimedia files easy.

The KF700 supports microSD expandability and is hot swappable, giving you easier access when you are switching your microSD cards, and acts as a bonus on top of the 90MB memory within the device. The battery can last for three days with moderate use, and by current standards, that is above average performance.

The Final Word

Banking on its smooth and intuitive touch screen interface, coupled with multiple navigation options such as the scroll wheel and numeric keypad, LG has got most things right with the KF700, with a touch of interface lag its main failing. Moreover, the KF700 is decently priced at a recommended retail price of $698, making it relatively affordable for those looking to get into the touch era.
