Portable and equipped with a big screen, a pair of stereo speakers, and two hot-swappable memory card slots, the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet has specifications to be as good a portable media player as it is an Internet tablet. Popular file formats for digital music, photos and videos are all supported.

The MP3 and the multimedia playback definitely occupied me when I’m bored. The sound produced is generally better than the ones played through mobile phone; It’s clearer and lesser noises when the volume is to it’s maximum. Tried uploading photos to shutterfly, it has a faster uploading speed compared to the computer I usually use. That is something that really amazes me.

Using the Mplayer which comes with the N800, I transferred my favourite MP3s to the Mini-SD card provided. The MP3s was encoded using LAME with VBR settings. Playback was crisp and clear. The stereo speakers provided no distortion of sounds even when the volume is set to the highest. This is the best loudspeaker I have used on a mobile device. As I listen to radio as well, I installed the radio applet from Maemo which works well with the N800. Playback via the headphones or through the stereo speakers was excellent. The Mplayer supports a wide variety of video formats. I was able to playback some of the more common formats such as AVI, Real Video, Mpeg-1 on the N800. However, full screen playback appears to be choppy at times.

Normal radio stations and internet ones works well with surprisingly good sound quality and clarity. Viewing videos from YouTube is not as fast as on a normal desktop machine. I’ve yet to figure out if it’s the streaming speed from wireless@sg or the implementation of the browser’s video engine. Videos are slightly jerky. I was able to shoot pictures with the N95, view it on the N800 and then upload to my Flickr account. It was a breeze to do it. Viewing pictures taken by the N95 on the N800 is cool and handy as it allows me to see if there were any quality issues with a shot.
