Self discharge is what happens to an electrical charge over time when not in use. 'Self discharge' affects all batteries but is more noticeable in rechargeable batteries.
As a general rule, standard rechargeable batteries lose or 'self discharge' 1% of their charge per day when left unused. For example, rechargeable batteries left in an unused digital camera or a drawer for over 3 months often need to be recharged before use.
