Intel has recently launched its Dual-core processor
lineup for the consumer segment with its Intel Pentium D Processors
and Pentium Extreme Edition Processor. These are essentially two
normal CPU cores that have been put together in a single package.
If the CPU is the brain of the system, buying a dual core processor
means getting two brains in one CPU. While dual core processors
are extremely useful in high volume work with many concurrent processes
and such, games have hardly been designed to take advantage of two
processing cores. Additionally, the Intel dual core processors currently
operate at a lower clock speed in contrast to the single core variants.
Add those two factors together and the fastest processor solely
for gaming in Intel's stable currently tilts in favor of the single
core based Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73GHz.
As
it's model name suggests, the processor is clocked at a staggering
3.73GHz and is the fastest consumer processor in raw clock speeds.
Integrated with a massive 2MB of L2 cache, it has a huge workspace
to feed its fast processing engine. Additionally, it supports the
Execute Disable Bit feature for safer computing against certain
viruses, Intel's Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T), Hyper-threading
to maximize the single CPU core and the SSE3 instruction set for
better multimedia performance.
