The industry is excited about Microsoft Windows
XP Professional x64 edition because of its capability to speed up
complex processing tasks like movie editing and 3D animation rendering
when such software is written for 64-bit operating systems. When
working with extremely large data sets, the x64 edition again comes
in extremely helpful because it can address up to 128GB of physical
memory (versus just 4GB or less on existing versions).
In order to take advantage of these processing
benefits, you will first require a 64-bit processor. AMD's Athlon
64 series is 64-bit computing ready and we used the Athlon 64 FX-55
since it is the recommended processor designed for gaming by AMD
that befits our needs. So how will a 64-bit capable processor help
you in gaming? Some of the hottest games currently such as Half-Life
2, Far Cry, Chronicles of Riddick are already tweaked to take advantage
of 64-bit technology to unleash better performance or game realism.
Many other game developers are already taking into consideration
of the advantages offered by 64-bit computing for their upcoming
games and to be prepared for it, it's best that you choose the right
processor for the ultimate gaming rig.
Apart
from the 64-bit computing advantage, AMD's Athlon 64 processors
greatly benefit from their Direct Connect Architecture. Integrated
on-chip is a pair of memory controllers and these communicate to
the system memory directly, without any intervention from an I/O
chip. This directly reduces memory latency and increases performance.
