NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 - New Mainstream Arrivals

The Cards & Test Setup

Galaxy GeForce GT 240 512MB GDDR5

Our card from Galaxy comes with NVIDIA's reference clock speeds and looks decidedly plain apart from the custom cooler. Galaxy decided to provide this card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory, which should go some way in speeding things up.

The Palit GeForce GT 240 Sonic Edition 1GB GDDR5

A card with a bright red PCB and orange cooler? It could only be Palit, and this is the Palit GeForce GT 240 Sonic Edition. It comes with 1GB of GDDR5 memory, and is factory-overclocked. The core comes overclocked at 585MHz, shaders at 1424MHz and memory at 3780MHz DDR.

Test Setup

We'll be running these cards through our usual Vista testbed which has the following specifications:

Windows Vista SP1 Test System:

  • Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 (3.00GHz)
  • Gigabyte X38T-DQ6 motherboard
  • 2 x 1GB DDR3-1333 Aeneon memory in dual channel mode
  • Seagate 7200.10 200GB SATA hard drive
  • Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1

We are interested to see how the new cards from NVIDIA match up against the GeForce 9600 GT and 9800 GT, and also the recently released GeForce GT 220 cards. From the red camp, we have included its closest rival the Radeon 4770 and also the Radeon 4670.
To ensure the cards generate meaningful, playable results, we have tweaked the settings of our usual benchmarks.
Here's the complete list of cards tested and the driver versions used:
