Apple's App Store Sucess

Since March 6th this year, the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) was made available to developers to come up with their own native applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The iPhone SDK allows developers to create their own unique kind of applications that utilizes the Multi-Touch user interface, accelerometer and GPS technology on the iPhone platform. Developers are able to either sell or put up their applications on the Apple App Store for free, providing a new way for iPhone and iPod Touch users to download these applications.

The new App Store provides iPhone and iPod Touch users alike with native applications in a variety of categories ranging from books to games to productivity tools. The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it's accessible from just about anywhere. App Store is also available for the iPod Touch but only over Wi-Fi. So in both cases, you can purchase and download applications wirelessly and start using them instantly. The App Store also notifies you when application updates are available.

The App Store seems to be a runaway success for Apple. Since the App Store was launched back in July, resounding figures of over 25 million applications have been downloaded. More than 800 applications in categories such as games, business, news, sports and more are available. About 200 applications are offered for free, and more than 90 percent priced at less than US$10. For iPod Touch users, forking out a mere US$9.95 to purchase the iPhone Software 2.0 will entitle you to enjoy the applications.

With companies such as Facebook and Flickr offering iPhone applications for the App Store, we can foresee more top name companies coming into the mix and delivering useful apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch as it plans to overtake rival mobile companies.
