App Attack #005: The Local Edition

As smartphone users, we sometimes tend to neglect the small but surely growing pool of local apps that are available. However, with the open-sourced Android OS, and the new Windows Phone 7 OS both gaining serious momentum, local developers have more visibility as well as room for creativity. Here, we highlight some apps that come with a distinctive local flavor.

iCash SG

This handy local app gives you a breakdown on ATMs (a total of five different banks are supported as well as the ATM5 network, SBI, AXS kiosks and iNETS kiosks) around your location, complete with directions on how to get there. As simple as it sounds and looks, iCash SG comes in handy if you are in the middle of nowhere with no cash to spare.

SG after 12

Price: Free
Category: Navigation
Platforms: Windows Phone 7

Stuck at night with no place to go? The SG After 12 does exactly what it sets out to do, which is to give you a list of nearby amenities that are still open after the clock strikes midnight. Clinics, clubs/bars and restaurants are some of the options you can check out, with basic information like address and opening hours given for easy referencing. We would love to see it add on a basic rating system with photos, but it does the job fairly well for now.

gothere.sg

Price: US$2.99
Category: Navigation
Platforms: Apple iOS

The gothere.sg app gives a comprehensive look at the cost of travelling in Singapore which we may add, is somewhat of a topic of contention amongst Singaporeans. While most free apps like Google Maps provide just enough information for us to get around to a foreign place, gothere.sg goes one step further by providing precise information on bus fares, parking rates and even ERP charges.

Paper Ninja

Price: US$0.99
Category: Game
Platforms: Apple iOS

If you are a fan of Fruit Ninja, you will definitely welcome Paper Ninja. The gameplay here is slightly different, but that doesn't make it any less fun. This highly-rated local game is cute, fast-paced and good for all ages.

buUuk

Singaporeans love their food. Think of the local buUuk app as a platform made just for hardcore foodies. The app helps users to find better places to eat at in their vicinity as well as recommend eateries based on user feedback and ratings.
