Routes To The World Cup

Sixty-four crazy matches, thirty-two hungry teams, and one irreplaceable Maradona. Like my fellow clansman, Kenny, I am anticipating World Cup fever to hit home hard in mere hours as I pen this. If you're like me, who happen to worship the wonderful legacies of this beautiful game but not the telco, well, there are more subtle ways to get your footy fixes than bowing down to exorbitant subscription plans.

For a quick update while you're on the move, head down to Twitter's World Cup 2010 page which showcases a dedicated link for each match with live commentaries (or should I say "live tweets") from blokes and chicks all over the world. Alternatively, you may get into the thick of the action by subscribing to Twitter's World Cup account (@FIFAWorldCupTM ) to enjoy their free barrage of updates. Of course, there's always the official FIFA World Cup or ESPN's Soccernet sites you can visit for the entire lowdown and pre-match predictions. For video highlights, don't hesitate to feast your eyeballs on Footytube and its scattering of World War 2010 highlights from the pitch.

For those at home, I understand FIFA has instructed the Malaysian broadcasters to encrypt the TV1 channel. But fret not, for footy fans in Singapore can still tap into the Indonesian RCTI channel via the free-to-air route with an indoor antenna. Just grab one for 20 bucks or so from an electronics store. On the other hand, you can always head over to your friendly neighborhood community clubs or Mcdonald's to enjoy a 90-minute surge of testosterone levels. Be sure to click on the last two links though, for not every CC or Happy Meal outlet screens them.

Till some lucky team lifts the coveted cup on July 11th, here's to more wonderful football moments and amazing goals for all to savor. To those who fail to appreciate the game, I can only extend my deepest condolences. To those who do, what else can I say, but GAME ON!

P.S. For free live streams, check out sites such as Ustream.tv or ATDHE.net. Video resolution may be poor, but the beauty of it is you don't have to fork out a single cent. Enjoy.
