With the release of 8x DVD-Writers, every ounce of attention has been pried from yesterday’s 4x DVD-Writers. Eventually, drives based on the second best write speed will soon be nothing more than a distant memory. While 8x write speed is exactly double that of 4x write speed, mathematical assumption of a 50% decrease in write time needed would be an erroneous conclusion. Even so, we’re sure some uninitiated readers would still have this hypothesis on their mind.

For a long time running, Plextor, the Lexus equivalent in the optical storage industry is a brand name renowned for quality and reliability. Drives bearing this name are amongst the handful of optical drives to be termed as “high-end” products, thus you can pretty much guess the high level of excitement and anticipation we’ve got when we received their latest 8x internal DVD-Writer. The usual doses of Plextor’s technologies such as Lossless Link, Burn-Proof and PowerRec have been injected into the PX-708A as well. If you’re not conscious about the various technologies associated with optical drives, all the abovementioned features provides for a more reliable drive in a bid to minimize the frequency of failed writing as much as possible. Without much further ado, let’s have a quick look through its technical specifications and zoom in on the benchmarks.
