Behold, the Olympus E-1!

Other than winning the TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) “Best Digital Consumer Camera” award in the year 2003 for the Olympus µ[mju:]400, Olympus, together with their developing partner Kodak, was also conferred TIPA's “Best Innovative Technology” award for their Four Thirds Digital System. It is with this new Four Thirds System, that they hope to introduce a completely new standard for 100% digital SLR photography.

So far, all digital SLR camera systems in the market have been designed to utilize components of pre-existing 35mm film-SLR cameras. The film SLR body, lens and flash units were simply made digital by combining them with new digital components such as adding in image sensors, LCD screens, etc…

Olympus claims that although mostly successful, they believe that the resulting cameras are not the optimum design due to more exacting optical requirements of digital photography. Thus, they set out together with Kodak in 2001 to pioneer a new standard in digital SLR photography by creating what is now known as the Four Thirds System.

From the camera body to the Zuiko DIGITAL lens and the electronic flash units, Olympus has tailored all these to fit the specific design requirements of digital photography.

Before we move on with the detailed aspects of the camera, here are the Olympus E-1’s detailed camera specifications:
