IBM ThinkPad T40 (Centrino)

We've always talked about how the Centrino Mobile Technology allows vendors to design slimmer and lighter notebooks than those seen in yesteryears, and the past few notebooks (those based on the Intel Centrino Mobile Technology) that we've reviewed recently are mostly those based on either the ultraportables or the sub-notebook class. The rule of thumb here is that the class and size of a notebook is usually determined by the size of its LCD screen, so a notebook with a 14.1-inch display will obviously be larger in terms of footprint than one with a 10.6-inch display.

A smaller notebook may not mean that it is slimmer than its larger cousins either. Smaller yes, but not always necessarily slimmer (a good comparison would be between the IBM ThinkPad X31 and Fujitsu's LifeBook P5010). With that said, we've already seen some really small Intel Centrino Mobile Technology-based notebooks such as the Fujitsu LifeBook P5010 or even the upcoming Sony VAIO PCG-TR1. But both of these notebooks are built around a 10.6-inch screen. What about a notebook with a 14.1-inch screen, you say? Well, there's the Dell Latitude D600, but it's not the slimmest around. Which brings us to the notebook that we want to cover today - the new IBM ThinkPad T40.

The ThinkPad T40 is futuristic-looking in its own sense.

Anyone remembered the venerable IBM ThinkPad T30, whose excellent built (e.g. Titanium Composite cover, great keyboard layout, etc.) and overall performance made it a huge crowd favorite in the mainstream market? Well, the ThinkPad T40 is all that and more! Let's proceed further to see what we mean.
