Introduction

What NVIDIA chipset comes after GeForce4 Ti 4600? If you were to answer ‘GeForce FX’, well it isn’t entirely right. Soon after the inception of GeForce4 Ti 4200-8x based graphics cards, which is basically the original GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP 8x support, NVIDIA launched the GeForce4 Ti 4800SE and GeForce 4 Ti 4800 chipsets. Both of these chipsets are nothing but re-branded GeForce4 Ti 4400 and GeForce4 Ti 4600 respectively, but with their core updated to support AGP 8x transfers.

In the last quarter of 2002, we presented our findings of the benefit of AGP 8x on the GeForce4 Ti 4200 in the AGP 4x vs 8x Part II article . To sum that article, AGP 8x provided no real benefits to the GeForce4 Ti 4200 series for current mix of games. The same faith applied to the RADEON 9700 Pro too. Clearly, this move by NVIDIA was to buy a little time till the GeForce FX arrived. What’s worse is that the new naming scheme is utterly misleading to the general public. This is worse than the GeForce4 MX naming fiasco. Is NVIDIA desperately trying to fill in the time gap or is it just fully making use of its number game tactics? That answer will probably be confined to the inner walls of NVIDIA’s marketing team and never be known.

Let's drop the name game issue and look into MSI’s offering of the GeForce4 Ti 4800SE. Dubbed the MSI G4Ti4800SE-VTD8X 128MB, it replaces the older MSI G4Ti4400-VTD 128MB. These are its technical specifications:-
