TyranoZaurus Linux

The Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 is the first Sharp PDA that uses an Embedded Linux operating system. There has been a lot of interests in developing PDAs to work under the Linux operating system, mainly due to its reputation for being efficient and stable. This was highly unsurprising as there are already many manufacturers offering similar Linux-based PDAs for quite a while. However, there has been no major brands until now.

Embedded Linux is no more than just a stripped down version of the popular Linux operating system. Since Linux is very modular in nature, a lot of the modules can be removed without hurting the main functions of the operating system. By removing all these unnecessary modules (such as server related modules), the operating system can be reduced to run with very low memory requirements. As such, it is perfect for PDAs since memory size is often an issue with PDAs, be it cost or real estate reasons.

The Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 is just more than a PDA - it's a mini computer on the go. Since Linux is highly popular among independent developers, the amount of applications and utilities available for the Zaurus is phenomenal. However, before we get down deep into the Zaurus SL-5500, let's take a look at the detailed specifications below :-
