Probably one of the more famous name in the optical storage industry, the Japan-based Plextor brand is synonymous to quality writing and the robustness of their drives. Also one of the largest OEM supplier, Plextor have taken a backseat of late however, especially with the emergence of its competitors - notably from Taiwan-based LITE-ON. While the likes of LITE-ON have been steadily churning out CD-RW drives progressively (with some vendors even making known their 52x-write CD-RW drives), Plextor only recently announced their new PX-W4824TA CD-RW drive.

Our evaluation unit does not have any markings on its front tray.

The Plextor PX-W4824TA is the successor to the PX-W4012TA and is based on a 48x-write, 24x-rewrite and 48x-read terminology. The engineering sample we received was based on the firmware version 0.EB but we can't confirm if the retail drive will carry the same firmware. In the last couple of days, we've been giving a thorough workout on the drive to test out its worth and give you a preview of what to expect in the final retail version (or final firmware).

The PX-W4824TA still bear the famous Plextor faceplate. Although the emergency jack is now on the bottom right side of the tray.

The PlexWriter 48x24x48x (bottom) is slightly shorter in length than its older sibling, the PlexWriter 40x12x40x (above).

The engineering sample we received was made in July this year.

Let's take a look at the specifications of this drive first.
