I am pretty much sure that most of you would have heard of the LITE-ON brand by now. One of the largest manufacturer of CD-RW drives, LITE-ON has progressively introduced faster and better CD-RW models into the market, at times, beating even the big boys like Plextor and Yamaha too. We also know that LITE-ON drives have consistently disguised itself in other brands, which, we all know have taken shape in the form of a cyclone. Iomega's recently introduced 32x drive also uses the LITE-ON engine - if you don't know yet.

The LITE-ON LTR-32123S, just like most drives we have reviewed till now, is an internal IDE version that requires the user to manually install into the computer system. Comes with only 2MB of buffer, we think the amount of buffer offered by LITE-ON is pretty miserable compared to other high-speed drives offered by Yamaha or Plextor. Like I have mentioned previously, 2MB would not last you even one second especially if you are writing at the highest 32x speed setting.

This is the reason why you'll find that most drives today will feature some sort of buffer underrun protection. Known as SMART-BURN (or Smart Monitoring & Adapting Recording Technology for BURNing), the drive will be intelligent enough to know how to resume from the point it stopped burning due to buffer underrunning. In addition to that, SMART-BURN also analyzes the disc quality to ensure the optimal setting of the laser power in order to maintain a certain quality in burning. If disc quality is really bad, it will automatically reduce the write speed so that every burn (whether using high or low quality discs) will be usable.

Let's take a look at the specifications below :-
