Notebook In a Box
The Pentium M mobile processor has been quite the commodity in and around the desktop scene ever since commercial desktop motherboards were launched to support Socket 479. Intel's mobile CPUs have been widely regarded to offer Pentium 4 level performance (per clock cycle) at a fraction of its power requirements. This has created quite a following for these low-powered, low-heat and ultimately low-noise processors as desktop replacements. Manufacturers that have been actively involved in promoting the 'mobile desktop' include AOpen, ASUS and DFI. During the recent Computex 2005 in Taipei, AOpen even previewed a Mac mini-like HTPC running on a Pentium M platform.
As the foremost SFF manufacturer in the market today, Shuttle wasn't going to be left out this particular market space and thus the Pentium M totting XPC SD11G5 was born. Other than the obvious energy, thermal and acoustic advantages of running on a Pentium M platform, Shuttle further optimizes for minimal noise output and heat build-up within the chassis by resorting to an external power supply. The last time Shuttle used an external power supply unit was for the minuscule (and still the smallest) Zen ST62K XPC. Housed in the excellent G5 chassis, the XPC SD11G5 is powered at heart by a custom Intel 915GM-based motherboard with a few interesting quirks that we will be sharing with you in the next few pages. If you take some time to peruse over the technical specifications below, you might even notice them yourself.
