Going to the War Games

Designing a casing specifically for gaming enthusiasts is not exactly a new trend. With the explosion of multiplayer games and LAN gaming a couple of years back, starting a LAN party where everyone brings along their own systems to a centralized location is quite common. The requirements for these frequent 'travelers' are slightly different from the usual feature and expansion packed casings favored by gamers. For these casings, the weight of the system becomes an essential consideration. Accordingly, manufacturers like Antec have launched casings that catered to this niche market. Typically, these casings have to juggle between the hardcore gamers' desire for performance and the weight issue mentioned. Aluminum then becomes the choice of material used in these casings, as it is both lightweight and an excellent heat conductor. Now that we are clear about the usual characteristics of a LAN gaming oriented casing, let us move on to Cooler Master's unique take on this product, the Cooler Master Ammo 533.

A picture says a thousand words and this is especially the case (no pun intended) for the Cooler Master Ammo 533. It is a bold departure from previous Cooler Master offerings with a rather unique thematic design that seems calculated to appeal to the gaming enthusiast. While most casings that are geared for gamers have mod friendly features like LED lights and extra cooling fans and ventilation, Cooler Master goes one step further with the Ammo 533. Instead of something conventional that would appeal to a wider audience, Cooler Master has obviously been inspired by the military in the design of the Ammo 533. From its Ammo moniker to the rugged looks, this is a casing that unabashedly declares which market segment and demographics its owner is likely to belong to. We take the plunge and bring this casing to our firing range for this review.

A distinctive, military influenced casing from Cooler Master.
