Seagate launched the Momentus 2.5-inch hard disk drive almost two years ago and it has enjoyed great success and acceptance in the mobile storage industry. Although the Momentus hard drive was hardly Seagate's first attempt at the 2.5-inch form factor, the fact that Seagate came back into the market was an indication that the mobile market was beginning to claim a sizable share of the total storage market.

Although the first generation of Seagate's Momentus drive came with only a single disk platter offering a maximum capacity of 40GB, it was well accepted by notebook manufacturers and it quickly made its way into branded notebooks as well as retail stores. The drive was fast, quiet, low-power and cool - qualities that manufacturers and users want in a small 2.5-inch hard disk drive.

Today, Seagate is back with the second generation of their 2.5-inch drives in a new line-up that promises greater speeds and higher capacities. The Momentus 5400.2 has a maximum capacity at 120GB by utilizing two disk platters and four read/write heads. The drive comes with a large buffer size of 8MB although it's not the largest around right now as Toshiba's top-of-the-line 2.5-inch drives are already offering up to 16MB. Regardless of that, Seagate still has every reason to be proud of the Momentus 5400.2 as it currently shares the limelight with Toshiba for the largest storage capacity in a 2.5-inch 5400RPM hard disk drive. For a company that just recently entered (or re-entered) the mobile storage market, Seagate has certainly made great strides to position itself as one of the top players in the mobile storage market. Looking at the second generation of Seagate's 5400RPM drives alone, there are already a total 12 different capacities and interfaces available - an indication that Seagate means business when it comes to offering manufacturers and users a complete range of products for every need and application.
