BenQ DW1640

In a relatively short span of just one year, BenQ has had six different models under its DW16xx series of optical disc drives rolled out of its factory doors. Their latest offering is the DW1640 and thanks to technology progression, it boasts a set of newer, faster and more superior technical specifications than all its predecessors. New write speeds brought about by this model include 8x for DVD+RW, 8x for DVD+R DL, 6x for DVD-RW, 4x for DVD-R DL, 48x for CD-R and 32x for CD-RW media. This combination of write specifications is currently the fastest available for internal DVD writers and by technical specification comparison alone, the DW1640 is undeniably an appealing proposition.

Besides its technological know-how, BenQ is also a highly distinguished brand known in recent times for its strong software support, good media compatibility and excellent write quality. All these traits were demonstrated and seen in past models such as the DW1600, DW1620 Pro and more recently, the DW1625. It is therefore natural that coming into the assessment of the DW1640, expectations are on the high side for the drive to follow the fine example set by its older award-winning siblings. However, unlike the first few models where older drives can be flashed to possess the same set of write specifications similar to the DW1620 Pro, the DW1640 is using a different OPU (Optical Pickup Unit) altogether. This means there is a high chance that the writing characteristics seen in past models might not be repeated this time round. Will this really be the case? You'll soon find out.
