Still Wide, Still Beautiful

If there were an aspect that BenQ has gotten right with their new Joybook S72, it would most definitely be the notebook's build quality. Protected by a skin of magnesium alloy all around, the new Joybook S72 feels solidly assembled with no audible hint of chassis stress at all and is, quite assumingly, a notebook that should stand up well to the rigors of daily handling with minimal fuss. Apart from lending a hand in the build department, the properties of magnesium alloy have also benefited the notebook's dimensions in the same way as they did for the older Joybook 7000 in maintaining a metallic yet slim profile. As far as first impression goes, we are pleased to find the S72 adopting the same sophisticated styling and build quality. In fact, the S72 is based entirely on the same chassis as the Joybook 7000, so much so that all details are completely identical right down to the fastener level.

BenQ Joybook S72

Being a new model that is based on the updated "Sonoma" platform, the Joybook S72 does present a set of technical improvements over the aging Joybook 7000. The processor, though still a "Dothan" variant, is now a Pentium M processor with a processor side bus or front side bus (FSB) operating at a faster 533MHz and not the slower 400MHz of the Pentium M 715 1.5GHz found in the Joybook 7000. This seemingly trivial 133MHz difference in FSB between the two notebooks actually represents a very significant increase in the overall data throughput and firmly places the
Joybook S72 as the superior notebook of the two in general computing performance, which we'll highlight more in the test results section.
