ViewSonic VX924 19-inch 4ms TFT LCD

Introduction

Not too long ago, we got our hands on the latest technological breakthrough in consumer LCD monitors. The BenQ FP91V+ was the first to introduce a stunning 6ms Gray To Gray (GTG) response time. We had anticipated then that the competition would heat up with other manufacturers starting to adopt the GTG standard in reporting monitor response time and we were right. However, we didn't expect the speed barrier to be erased in just a little over one month. ViewSonic has unveiled their answer to BenQ's FP91V+ and this is in the form of the 4ms VX924. That's right, we have in our hands the world's first 4ms GTG LCD monitor. If that isn't enough to make you drool, the VX924 has a typical response time of 5ms. This means that both GTG and regular Black-White-Black pixel response times are almost identical. If you remember, the BenQ FP91V+ had a regular response time of 12ms even though its GTG timing was 6ms. Theoretically, this would mean that the ViewSonic VX924 is capable of smoother performance in all areas.

ClearMotiv 4ms

It is not surprising to find LCD monitors from different manufacturers actually using the same panel. In the case of ViewSonic and BenQ, they both source their panels from AU Optronics. Therefore, the end result often boils down to hardware implementation. ViewSonic employs their updated ClearMotiv technology to ensure the VX924 is capable of the blistering speeds they claim to achieve.

After going through the technical documents concerting ClearMotiv, we find that there are mainly two items of interest. The first is the Advanced Overdrive Technology, which is basically a higher voltage stepping to boost pixel responsiveness. This form of applying more voltage is nothing new though ViewSonic has claimed that they are able to boost both Gray and Black/White pixel timings. The second is the Amplified Impulse Technology, which dynamically controls the amount of overdrive required. The following diagram is a basic illustration of how AIT works to allow faster pixel transition.

Just how well does this translate to actual performance still has to be found out and we put the monitor through its paces in the next few pages. Before we begin though, take a little time to digest the technical specifications of the ViewSonic VX924.
