Speedier Than Thou

In a bid to stay at the top of the LCD race, BenQ has in the past few months belted out product after product ahead of their competitors. With the hotly contested 8ms LCD market being taken care of by their FP71E+ and FP937S+ models (17-inch and 19-inch respectively), BenQ is now pushing a new breed of LCDs. The FP91V+ is a 12ms LCD monitor that is also technically a 6ms panel. How's that you say?

Historically, the response time rating we have been used to is a measure of the 'Time-rise' plus 'Time-fall' (TrTf) of a pixel. In an easier term, it measures the time taken for a pixel to go from full black (with an index of 0) to full white (with an index of 255) then back to black. There is however, another lesser known timing measuring Gray To Gray (GTG for easier reference) colors. Moving images such as video, animation and games generally involve gray levels (the other 254 shades) and thus, the GTG figure is known to be a much more accurate representation of actual LCD performance. As its name implies, GTG measures the frequency required for a pixel to shift from one shade of gray to another. Users will need to note that just like general response time, the reported GTG time is also taken in regards to the best possible scenario for certain colors and not a uniform indicator.

If you haven't heard about GTG before, it is because marketing strategies won't allow them to be revealed to the public. GTG timing have always been much higher in contrast with the normal black-white-black measurement. You should not be surprised that a speedy 16 or 12ms LCD might have GTG response times higher as 20ms. Since the FP91V+ boasts an Overdrive technology with a Gray To Gray response time of 6ms, BenQ is naturally thumping their chest and roaring.

So now we have one LCD monitor with dual response time ratings, regular 12ms and 6ms Gray To Gray. We have always lived by with the higher GTG timings, even on the new 8ms and 12ms monitors. So how then will the reduction of GTG response time to 6ms be any different in our day to day tasks? How will it affect gaming and entertainment performance? We truly intend to find out. Before we begin, let's take some time to go through the technical specifications of the BenQ FP91V+.
