Introduction

Nikon's popular compact Coolpix range has just up their number of models with the joint release of the 4.0 Megapixel Nikon Coolpix 4200 and the 5.1 Megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5200. A range known for their compact and ergonomic camera body design, the newer models not only promises the same, it does it with a more stylish and slimmer look. The brain behind the camera is what Nikon claims as a newly developed D-SLR based image processing engine with a 3x Zoom-Nikkor lens with focal range of 7.8 to 23.4mm (equivalent to a 38-114mm lens in 35mm format). Also interestingly featured is the Advanced Red-eye Reduction which provides automatic in-camera correction.

For this review, we have brought in the Nikon Coolpix 5200. Touted more as a point and shoot digital camera, it features 15 scene modes to be chosen via its intuitive graphical user interface for no-brainer picture capturing. 12MB of internal memory enables the storing of images without the use of an SD memory card while direct printing is made possible through support of PictBridge compliant printers.
