New SiS Chipsets

At CeBIT this year, SiS announced two new chipsets to complete their offering for motherboard manufacturers who require state-of-the-art solutions for the upcoming PCI Express technology. One was for the Intel Pentium 4 while the other was for AMD's Athlon 64.

SiS introduced the new SiS656 northbridge which supports PCI Express x16 graphics. Paired with the new SiS965 southbridge which also supports PCI Express technology, manufacturers can build PCI Express motherboards using SiS chipsets. The SiS656 supports dual-channel DDR2-667 and DDR400. Manufacturers can choose to use DDR400 if they wish to build boards for the mass market, or they can enable its DDR2 support and build boards for the enthusiasts and high performance systems.

SiS also introduced a similar PCI Express enabled chipset for the Athlon 64 family and also upcoming Athlon 64 processors with 1GHz HyperTransport links. The new SiS756 supports PCI Express x16 graphics and will also be paired with the SiS965 to give manufacturers a complete PCI Express solution. Similar to the SiS656, the SiS756 will connect to the SiS965 via its proprietary MuTIOL 1G interconnect.

The slightly not-so-advanced SiS755FX is an improved version of the SiS755 which comes with support for upcoming Socket-939 Athlon 64 processors. The only difference here is its support for AMD's upcoming 1GHz HyperTransport links in their future Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX processors.

All the various Southbridges on display at the booth. Can you tell which has what features? Honestly, we can't really remember them ourselves. Also, seen here is the SiS966 Southbridge which is an even more powerful solution than the upcoming SiS965. The SiS966 is equipped with four PCI Express x1 ports, supports High Definition Audio and it comes with a MuTIOL 2G interface to link with SiS' next generation Northbridges.
