The Asus P4T533-C is one of the most feature packed boards I've seen. If you've thought of upgrading the board with peripherals, you'll probably not need to do much since there are already quite a number of key components integrated into the board. As the 850E chipset uses the older ICH2, it features only USB 1.1 ports. However, Asus did not forget those who requires USB 2.0 and have integrated an NEC USB 2.0 controller on the board. There are a total of eight USB ports with the P4T533-C, four from the ICH2 controller, and another four from the NEC USB 2.0 host controller. You'll probably never run out of USB ports with this board. Asus has bundled a bracket with an additional two USB 2.0 ports for the on-board header. On the bracket, you'll find the Game Port connector as well. If you intend to extend the other two on-board USB 1.1 ports, you'll need to purchase a separate connector or attach it directly with the USB port on the chassis.

Connectivity is a big thing today and motherboards without an Ethernet controller would seem incomplete. With the Asus P4T533-C, you'll find Intel's 82562ET PHY working together with the MAC controller in the ICH2 to give you 100Mbps of Ethernet connectivity. The RJ-45 port is located at the rear end of the board together with all the I/O ports. With integrated LAN, it saves you another PCI slot for other purposes.

The audio connectors are now stacked up and you'll find two USB 2.0 ports together with the RJ-45 LAN port at the rear end of the motherboard.

Integration and setting up the P4T533-C is quite simple as Asus have introduced the EZ Plug power interface. For those who plans to keep their chassis, they need not worry as the P4T533-C does not need special power supplies to power up the board. Unlike first generation i850 motherboards which required two other power connectors, the P4T533-C only needed an ATX 12V connector. For those who does not have the connector on their power supply, they need not worry as the EZ Plug connector is based on the familiar 4-pin MOLEX power connector. Also, if you were to use the EZ Plug, both power connectors are located in the same area and cable management is much simpler.

The board comes integrated with an Avance Logic software audio codec that supports up to 6-channels of audio. At the rear end of the board, you can actually re-route the rear and bass/center channels to the Line-In and Mic connectors. Asus also bundled a bracket that comes with SPDIF outputs for both coaxial and optical connectors. A very simple and cost effective solution for 6-channel digital audio indeed.

In the P4T533-C, you'll find a POST reporter instead of just LEDs leaving you to decide what's wrong with the motherboard. The POST reporter is a speech boot-up reporting feature that tells you the problems encountered by the motherboard upon boot-up. You can channel the POST reporter audio to the buzzer or Line Out by changing a jumper if you think the voice is not audible enough. But I must warn you not to turn up your volume too high otherwise it will definitely give you a horrid fright.

Asus also integrated its Q-Fan technology for smarter and quieter control. Although the Pentium 4 is not that hot as compared to the Athlon XP (we attribute it to the heatsink and fan design), the Q-Fan technology actually helps to throttle fan speed according to CPU load. At low CPU loads, the fan slows down so that noise is kept to a minimal level. This will help keep your system from sounding too loud. We're pretty glad that Asus is addressing the issue of noise with this Q-Fan technology.
