Test Details

Our DDR RAM test bed remains identical to our previous reviews and these are the main specifications :-

  • Pentium 4 3.0GHz (PSB 800MHz) processor
  • Asus P4C800 Deluxe (i875P) motherboard
  • Memory modules operating in dual-channel mode
  • RAM:FSB Ratio = 1:1
  • PAT Enabled (unless otherwise stated in table below)
  • MSI GeForce4 Ti 4200 128MB (Detonator driver = 41.09)
  • Windows XP Professional operating system

Although we tested the RAM at its default 2-2-2-6 timing, we did further testing to check if it could handle even tighter timings. The most aggressive setting we could utilize on our test system was 2-2-2-5 and the Mushkin 1GB Dual Pack (2 x 512MB) PC3200 2-2-2 Special memory had no problems coping with it. However, performance with 2-2-2-5 was not at its best most of the time, as you'll notice in the results section later.

Besides assessing the Mushkin modules at DDR400, overclocking was another strong criteria for these high-end DDR400 memory modules. At 2-2-2-6, you could drive the system FSB up to 207 MHz to achieve DDR414 reliably. At 2-3-3-6, you can drive the system FSB to 215MHz and that gives a DDR430 equivalent (at 2.75V) for synchronous operation. Beyond this, no matter how much we relaxed the timings (even with PAT disabled) or supplied more voltage, we couldn't obtain higher speeds. We've tested the Mushkin memory modules with our full suite of tests at DDR430 to assess the stability as well as giving you a heads up on the overall system performance. For comparisons, we've included Corsair's TWINX512-3200LLPT (single bank modules) and the Kingmax's SuperRAM DDR433 (dual bank modules) at both DDR433 and DDR400 speeds. Take careful note of the test configurations below to fully understand the results we've obtained.
