Hitting the Right Caps
With the introduction of the 3.5-inch Deskstar 7K400 400GB desktop PC hard disk drive, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST) is signaling to the industry that it is once again the capacity king of the desktop storage industry. Not only is the company bent on increasing capacity for the 3.5-inch drive business, it is also bullish about businesses for its 2.5-inch, 1.8-inch and 1-inch drives, most of which are significant form factor drives for the notebook PC and consumer electronics devices today.
Whats even better is that the company posted a US$105 million profit for the fourth quarter and a US$4.2 billion revenue for its first year of operations as a new company after the strategic combination of both Hitachis and IBMs hard drive operations in January 2003. To tell us more on what exactly is Hitachi GST focused on, HWZ speaks to Robert Holleran, the General Manager of the 2.5-inch & 1.8-inch Consumer and Commercial Business Unit at Hitachi GST.
