The Card

The card is basically the same as the A250 Ultra TD except that it comes with the normal stainless steel I/O faceplate. The construction of the heatsink and fans are still as elaborate and kickass as the WinFast A250 Ultra TD. The heatsink basically serves to cool all your memory chips including the GPU. Since the GPU is based on the 0.13 micron manufacturing technology, it is no longer dissipating as much heat as previous GeForce2/3 GPUs but a larger heatsink is still needed to keep the chip running cool. However, we think that the heatsinks deserve a little more attention on quality as we still see remaining aluminium bits stuck by the side of the heatsink.

The heatsinks should not have these loose sharp edges if they were properly manufactured. Imagine one of these aluminium bits shorting the circuit on the graphics board.

On the heatsink are two fans, protected by a stainless steel grill. I did not point out in the last article that these grills actually came with blue plastic laminates that actually protect the finishing of the grills. So, you have to peel them off in order to reveal the shiny silver finishing. The lengths that Leadtek go to make the card look appealing deserves a mention here.

Remember to peel off the blue plastic laminate to get the shiny silver grill finishing.

There's also the air filter located below the grill. Its function is to trap dust. As we know, dust collected on the surface of the heatsink can form an insulating layer which prevents the exchange of heat. If that happens, the heatsink's overall efficiency will drop and overheating might occur. Unscrewing the fan and removing the grill will let you take the air filter out for occasional cleaning. Just wash them in water to remove unwanted dust and let it dry well before re-installing it again.

Similar to the WinFast A250 Ultra TD, the WinFast A250 TD also came with an S-video TV-out connector. Cables are provided in the retail package and you need not go hunting for one should you need to output movies or graphics onto your TV screen.

The Leadtek WinFast A250 TD uses the Conexant video encoder solution for its TV-out feature. The encoder supports NTSC, PAL and SECAM analog TV systems.

Lastly, I have to say that Leadtek needs to address the issue of bundled software. Again, we found DroneZ and Gunlok with the card. These two games have been bundled with their graphics card since the GeForce3 days and we think it's getting a little out of fashion.
