Nothing Unusual

Lest you think the Palit is really a clone of the GeCube card, that is only accurate if you consider their technical specifications. The actual appearance of the Palit card is very much different from GeCube's version. The aluminum cooler for the Palit is smaller and restricted to cooling the core. The four memory chips are left to fend for themselves without even passive heatsinks, which is unlike the GeCube card. That turned out fine though, as the temperatures that we recorded showed that there was no harm done and the memory chips stayed cool throughout our tests. The cooler worked normally for the core too and we had no complaints about its effectiveness. Unlike many overclocked cards that bristle with the extra fans and assorted cooling aids, the Palit Radeon X550V+ looks ordinary and no different from your typical lower end graphics card. Despite its humble appearance, the performance of the Palit card was arguably more than equal to the GeCube as the benchmarks will show later.

Compared to the GeCube Radeon X550 we have seen recently, the cooler fan on the Palit card looks rather small and isolated.

Flipping over, there was nothing prominent on the other side of the card.

Infineon 2.8ns rated DDR2 memory chips are used.

We found the usual set of I/O connectors at the rear.

Similar to the lower end cards that we have encountered, do not expect to get more than a small handful of accessories and software. For the Palit Radeon X550V+ 256MB, we only found a CD with the drivers, which is not as crucial in these days when almost everyone has internet connectivity and most users would probably download the latest drivers from ATI's website directly. A rather short and thin S-Video extension cable is the only other accessory found. So here's the rather short list of items found in the package:-

  • Installation Guide
  • Driver CD
  • S-Video extension cable
