Introduction

Are you one of those people who pull yourself out of bed early in the morning and head on out to the work in your cubicle all day long? Well, for some, this isn’t the normal work routine anymore. For many executives in this day and age, slugging it out in the little cubicle is a thing of the past. If you didn’t noticed, a growing number of these executives are hitting the road and getting out of the boring 3 by 3 cubicle to work. Armed with lightweight and portable Wi-Fi capable notebooks, this group of mobile professionals demands ultra portability and mobility, anything less is not acceptable. In a world where time is money and money is time, the last thing they need is for bulky computing peripherals to bog them down. While most notebooks you come across these days have a built-in optical drive for a more all rounded computing experience, they unarguably tend to contribute to the overall dimension and weight of your average notebooks as well. The solution? Take the optical drive out of the notebook’s design totally and have the freedom to use them as external hook-up devices.

In our lab today is one such device from ASUS. While not exactly a dedicated optical drive manufacturer, ASUS has been pumping out optical drives amongst other computer peripherals for ages nonetheless. With a huge R&D team and years of experience in this area, they’re just as capable as any in churning out quality optical storage devices. The ultra-portable optical storage unit under our surgical knives today is the SCB-2408-D. Featuring speeds of 24X CD-R, 12X CD-RW, 24X CD-ROM, and 8X DVD-ROM all within the confines of a featherweight and slim silver casing. This drive is definitely one of the smallest portable optical drives to ever grace our lab, and being the workaholics that we are, we spent no time in admiring the looks of the unit and quickly shoved the SCB-2408-D through our benchmark furnace. Will it withhold the intensity of our tests? Read on!
