Cooler Installation

The Gigabyte 3D Cooler-PRO is constructed out of heatpipes with equally spaced fins glued to these heatpipes. The heatpipes are connected to a copper base which helps dissipate and transfer heat from the CPU to these heatpipes. There are a total of four heatpipes, each of them help draw heat from the copper base right up to the fins. The fins on this cooler are packed and tight, giving it a lot more surface area for heat dissipation. Right in the center of these fins, you'll find a large and powerful blower which drives air through the fins, thus, efficiently and quickly cooling the CPU.

The Gigabyte 3D Cooler-PRO looks impressive with its four heatpipes and tightly-spaced fins.

This design is much better than traditional heatsinks as it uses as many as four heatpipes to pull heat away from the CPU. In addition to that, the blower fan is located right in the center of the heatsink fins and this gives it a uniform airflow through the entire heatsink. During the test, we could feel that heat is being expelled from all sides of the heatsink and it only goes to show its cooling efficiency.

The contact surface of the copper base has an ultra smooth finishing.


The blower fan has a maximum rating of 0.5A.

On the top of the heatsink, you'll find a tiny PCB board with connectors. One of these connectors are already pre-connected to the cooler's blower fan. The 3-pin connecter in the center connects to the fan speed controller while the 4-pin power connector to the far right is to power up the fan. This 4-pin connector is similar to the power connector found on floppy drives, so if you have one of these connectors unused in your system, you can connect it directly to the heatsink. Alternatively, you can always use the converter cable supplied in the package.

Power and fan speed connectors are found on the top edge of the heatsink.

The fan speed controller is a single rheostat dial which lets you change the fan speed on the fly. It come pre-installed in a 3.5-inch drive bracket that can be installed to the front panel of your casing. If you prefer it to be located at the back, you can always uninstall it and re-attach it to the provided PCI bracket.

A 3.5-inch floppy bay bracket is provided with the fan speed controller.


You can select the fan speed using this dial as a guide. Note that the values don't really correspond to the actual fan speed.

Installing the heatsink was easy as it does not require you to pre-install the clips prior to using it on your motherboard. This is due to its unique tool-less design which allows you to simply just clip the heatsink base to either the CPU socket or retention mechanism. On Pentium 4 or K8 systems, installation was simple as the clips are located on the side and hooking it up to the retention mechanism is really a no-brainer. However, when you're using the cooler in a Socket-462 system, you may find it a little troublesome to install as the clip moves freely along the copper base - making it a little harder to center the heatsink on the CPU. In addition, the top of the heatsink is huge in comparison to the base and this makes it difficult to access tight spaces below the heatsink, especially when you have lots of capacitors surrounding the socket. However, once you get used to it, you'll really appreciate the flexibility given.
