Distinguishing The Turion 64 Platform - Part 1

The first surefire way of telling the resolve AMD has in penetrating the thin and light notebook segment lies in their marketing slogan. In a move that's similar to Intel and their Intel Centrino Mobile Technology, the Turion 64 processor is now under the official product name of AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology. "Mobile Technology" - that bit of the catchphrase is the first clear sign of AMD's strong determination to march into the same turf that has long been dominated by Intel.


Ecosystem of Providers

Looking beneath the slogans is where we'll find the major differences between the AMD and Intel platforms. In the AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology solution, components such as the motherboard core logic chipset for example, can be supplied by a number of chipset vendors, which is the complete opposite of Intel's stranglehold practice that have had notebook manufacturers procuring Intel chipsets, processors and WiFi cards in order to earn the Centrino badge and advertising subsidies. Granted AMD has less financial muscle to flex, this strategy of chipset and component liberty must be adopted if it is to stand a chance in a pro-Centrino market.

Just as we've mentioned above, each subsystem tier in the AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology is provided by a variety of participating vendors.




Architecture

From AMD's chair, this looks set to be a win-win situation for the company as it would not only bag the ready support of vendors who were forced to sit out when Intel first launched Centrino, but would also make it cheaper and easier for companies to go the Turion 64 way since the components that go into a Turion 64 notebook are going to come from a highly competitive and nonexclusive component ecosystem. Depending on the manufacturers' specifications, the pricing for Turion 64 notebooks can thus vary greatly, possibly allowing for a broader pricing catalogue than Centrino notebooks. If this strategy pays dividends, AMD and its supporting partners will all but benefit in a big way. That of course is the essence of the grand scheme but in order for it to bear fruits, the Turion 64 processor must first demonstrate that it has what it takes to really give the Intel Pentium M processor a good run for its money.

Before rushing out for a Turion 64-enabled notebook, we ask that you educate yourself with yet another mind teasing modeling scheme to make the right investment. Just like the four digit modeling for the Mobile Athlon 64 processors, the new number scheme for the Turion 64 was specially formulated in making sense of performance without delving into mundane technical details such as clock speed, size of L2 cache and thermal design power.
