A Beefed Up Inspiron 6000

Since the successful launch of the Intel "Sonoma" platform, notebooks of today are expected to pack more punch in areas concerning processing power and multimedia experience. Bringing to market its first notebook with this new platform is the Inspiron 6000, Dell's latest crack at desktop replacement notebooks. Signature to multimedia touting notebooks, a 15.4-inch widescreen display can be found listed in the Inspiron 6000's specifications sheet. But unlike most other brands, the screen resolution is not just limited to the now commonplace WXGA resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Instead, Dell's approach with its display is to offer customers three iterations of its 15.4-inch widescreen panels in the form of varying pixel count: WXGA (1280 x 800 pixels), WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050 pixels) or WUXGA (1920 x 1200 pixels). This flexibility in display resolution options should allow the Inspiron 6000 to satisfy a wide range of consumers ranging from casual homeowners to designers. Of course, as per sales model of Dell, most components within the notebook can be customized to conform to your unique requirements.

The Dell Inspiron 6000.

Manufactured wholly out of plastic, the Inspiron 6000's construct is decent but not exactly something to write home about. Subtle hints of plastic strain were audible in the form of creaks when the unit was held up by its edges. Also, build quality of the row of multimedia controls and power button were two other gripes we had with the notebook. In terms of feedback, the response from those buttons was no more than a hollow click and this came across a tad wobbly in application as well.

Appearance-wise, Dell has introduced some obvious changes from the older 'Aviator' design used for Inspirons of yesterday. Most noticeably absent is the winged shaped Dell logo and in its place is an all-new design incorporated to keep pace with a global push towards an industrial design fashioned for consumer electronics. According to Dell, the alpine white trimming together with Dell's signature crest will help Dell fulfill its design overhaul and also help to ensure its customers would have a familiar design that's easy to identify and relate to at one glance. There's even a fine selection of snap-on panels (four to be exact) should you so decide to change the tone of the Inspiron 6000 to match your mood.
